Artist Statement
It is easy to forget that we exist as a part of nature. Often, we return to the awe and solace of nature’s beauty for guidance. For years, I have drawn inspiration from the interaction between nature and the rest of the world. Many times it’s the simple things that often inspire me most. I seek out elements and images from nature and I incorporate them, sometimes directly, and sometimes indirectly through nature’s spirit. I often stretch the boundaries of art by using uncommon components to create unique works. Another inspiration comes from the distinctive metamorphosis between reality and imagination. My work is about nature combining with life, in that middle spot where each learns to respect the other. I like adding an occasional twist or surprise to my work. These function as subtle reminders of our relationship with the natural world.
My techniques are born from my imagination, discoveries, and many trials. My work is a mix of the traditional and contemporary; depending on the message I want to convey. Although I have been creating art for over 30 years It wasn’t until my return to college for my studio art degree that I decided to share my work. Art became a therapeutic comfort especially those times when I had to reach deep inside my soul for strength and guidance. Sculpting was my first love. I remember spending hours as a child making figures out of wadded up papers. This has evolved into my being able to make sculptures of all sizes without the use of armatures and wires. Paper sculpting allows me to actually feel every detail. I exploit the flexibility of paper, playing with texture, natural colors, and form to realize my vision. Years of sculpting paper has recently evolved into mixed media combined with natural dyes, nature’s stains and acrylics all of which provide a personal challenge for each project.
My work is a part of a natural circle. It starts with nature where I get sources for pulp, which is transformed into paper. I find a deeper meaning in the simple and clear. I hope this allows people to see their own journey in what I have created.
