“Journey”

I set out to create a 3D project entirely from sculpted papers and natural dyes. A child’s chair perfectly represented the journey we all have taken in search of our personal destiny. The chair is colored with walnut dye because walnut trees represent wisdom, inspiration and knowledge. The scribbles and artwork on the chair represent different stages of life and maturity. The circular braided rug nicely anchors the chair and is made of denim and broken down fibers from a child’s clothing. The different shoes made from paper show the steps from youth to teen years. The clothes represent the redefinition of gender and sexuality and are colored with blueberry (a child’s favorite), turmeric, denim, madder dyes and walnut. Some of the colors will fade more with time just like our memories.

I hid things that were small but meaningful to me throughout the piece, allowing viewers to find their own personal journey through it.
